MeMeMe Goddess Bronzing Rocks

I love products that serve more than one purpose. MeMeMe’s Goddess Bronzing Rocks ($20) let you get a few different uses out of them. There are several shimmery shades of bronze “rocks” tucked into this tiny pot, ranging from pale taupe to deep copper. Use them as a bronzer by sweeping a fluffy brush over the rocks’ surface and blending into your skin; you’ll get a flush that’s a nice mix of all the shades of the rocks. Or, for a wash of nude shimmer on your eyes, drag an individual rock in your choice of color across your lids, or pick up the color with a fluffy brush and blend across the lid. Finally, looking to amp up your gloss? Take a chip off the old rock and grind it into a fine powder, then mix into your gloss or pat on top of your lipstick with your fingers. It’s like getting 3 products in 1, all for $20. I’ll take it.

Physicians Formula Bronze Booster: For Bronzing Emergencies

I nearly called 911 last week, because I had a bronzer emergency. Ok, not really–I’m just being dramatic. But I was annoyed when, a few weeks ago, I dropped my beloved MAC Bronzing Powder in Golden and it shattered into hundreds of teeny-tiny pieces. I was headed out to a friend’s birthday dinner, and needed a bronzer in a pinch. (I know bronzer doesn’t necessarily qualify as emergency-worthy, but trust me, without it, I’m vampirish…and not in a chic Twilight kind of way.) I had a nice base tan thanks to Bare Escentuals Faux Tan, so I was looking for something that provided a sheer wash of color with a matte finish. On a whim, I tried Physicians Formula Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting Pressed Powder ($15), because I’d heard great things about it. I was reluctant to fork over $15 for this at CVS, since it’s higher than other drugstore bronzer prices, but I know PF’s stuff works great, so I opened my wallet.

Getting Toasty With L’Oreal Sublime Luminous Bronze Self-Tanning Lotion

I’m so sick of baring my pasty face to the world. It’s too early to go spray-tanning (no UV rays for me!), so I’ve been slathering L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Luminous Bronzer Self-Tanning Lotion (approx. $9) all over my face. I’m not screwing around with these gradual tanners that take forever to impart a golden glow; this is the only thing that gets me golden in 2 seconds flat. It’s a little too shimmery to go bare-faced with this formula, but if you apply it before bed, you can wash off the shimmer off in the morning. And if you apply makeup over it, it definitely mutes the effect.

If you have oily skin or your pores clog easily, you’ll want to stay away from this, as the shimmer flecks could cause problems for your complexion. (The formula is actually made for your body, not your face.) But if you aren’t prone to break-outs, break the beauty rules and use this anywhere you like!

Roll Out the Welcome Matte for MAC Bronzing Powder

I had been loving MAC’s Refined Golden bronzer from this summer’s To The Beach collection. It was flecked with microfine shimmer, giving me a beachy tan without the UV exposure. But now that the seasons have changed, applying it all over was way too Jersey Shore. I’m at the point where I want to look sculpted and slightly sun-kissed…not like Snooki.

So I gave MAC Bronzing Powder in Golden ($22) a trial run. The artist told me that the powder does have the slightest bit of shimmer in it, but goes on with a matte effect. She was right — no excess shimmer. The slightly toasty shade seemed great for my pale NW20 complexion, especially since I’m not trying to look supertan. I used a fluffy brush to sweep it underneath my cheekbones (to make myself look I actually have cheekbones), across my forehead, down my nose, and lightly over my chin. I only placed it where the sun would naturally hit, as opposed to over my entire face. The end result? A subtle, believable golden glow with amazing (fake!) bone structure. Exactly what I was looking for.

Warm Up with Cargo Multi-Mix Bronzer

A few weeks ago, I won a giveaway from the fabulous Karen of  Makeup & Beauty Blog. Imagine my surprise when a packaged arrived in the mail bearing Cargo Multi-Mix Bronzer ($28) (and a sweet note from Karen!). The liquid bronzer is a universally flattering shade that can be worn alone or, for a more muted effect, mixed into moisturizer, foundation, or primer.

The color is a true bronze, and does a good job at imparting a believable sun-kissed glow. It livened up my complexion to a slightly toasty shade without looking fake, streaky, or orange. I’ve used it alone and mixed into moisturizer, and both ways, it smooths on skin easily and seamlessly.

If you’re pale like me (my complexion is MAC NW20), you need just a few dabs to warm up your skin. I find it helps to dab a dollop on the back of my hand and dip my fingertips in that to apply. I’ve also applied it with a foundation brush, and it works really to blend it all in. Due its universally pretty color and comfortable, long-lasting wear, this is a great liquid bronzer.

There’s only one drawback: the price. At $28, the 1oz. tube just isn’t enough product to justify the hefty tag. Like I said, I won this in a giveaway, but I probably wouldn’t have purchased this on my own because it’s just too expensive.

Extended Vacation Moroccan Mineral Shimmering Sands Facial Tanner

Extended Vacation’s Moroccan Mineral Shimmering Sands Facial Tanner ($29) is the best self-tanning product I’ve ever used. I’ve had bad luck with facial tanners; usually I get no color whatsoever, and occasionally I’ll be left with noticeable orangey streaks once the color develops. Shimmering Sands is awesome; it worked on me from the very first application.

The lotion, a creamy formula, is tinted bronze with a faint shimmer, which takes the guesswork out of application. You can see where you’re rubbing it into your skin. It has a “self-correcting” formula that reduces streaking, and is packed with amino acids, antioxidants, and botanical extracts. Extended Vacation recommends applying the tanner before bed to a clean face for best results. Apply it just as you would a night cream, and you’ll awake in the morning with a real-looking golden glow.  To avoid darkening my brows and hairline, I dip a Q-tip in warm water and gently rub over after application; this removes any product that could potentially tint hair.

The self-tanner is safe to use with airbrush tans and spray tans, and won’t diminish color. It also deepens natural tans.

The bottle is small (1.7oz.), and it’s pricey, but you only need 1 pump of product to cover your entire face. (If you like a deeper golden color, go with 2 pumps.) The bottle should last you awhile.

Bobbi Brown Bahama Bronze Set

Bobbi Brown’s new Bahama Bronze set ($55) may excite the olive- to dark-skinned girls out there. Made especially for you, this little kit will become your go-to secret weapon when you want to look sexily bronzed and glimmery. Sweep on Bobbi’s fabulous Illuminating Bronzer, which has just a hint of shimmer, in Bahama Bronze with the included bronzing brush (complete with travel-friendly short handle). Finish off your look with glinty Gold Coast Lip Glaze, a sheer gloss-lipstick hybrid that won’t dry out lips. This color combo will look fabulous on darker skintones. The only other thing you need is a coat of inky mascara, and you’ve got a sultry, sexy, island-worthy look perfect for hot summer nights.

Philly Find: Surf City Airbrush Tanning Studio

Orange. Blotchy. Streaky. Miserable. That’s usually how spray-tanning goes. You enter a booth, get misted by some funky-smelling solution that you never know when is going to pop out of the little nozzles because the tech didn’t explain it to you…so you end up getting no solution on your front, and four times the correct amount on your back. And then you try to frantically rub it in before it dries, but you still feel sticky, and then it smears all over your clothes. Why do we do this to ourselves just to get a safe tan?

Philly ladies, it’s so much easier — and less stressful — at Surf City Tan in the Manayunk neighborhood of Philadelphia. Linda, the owner, is the sole technician at this small studio, and she knows what she’s doing. She offers 4 hand-blended shades: Natural (light sunkissed tan), Beach (glowy medium-bronze), Indian Summer (Beach with red undertones), and Island (a rich copper). All formulas contain a cosmetic bronzer, which gives you that instant toasty glow, and DHA (dihydroxyacetone, the active ingredient in self-tanners that reacts with your skin to tan you), so your color deepens on your skin as it sets.

Linda custom-mixes the shades and applies the solution by hand using a professional-grade airbrush gun. She’s a perfectionist, and makes sure you leave the studio happy and bronzed to your liking.

In case you have any discomfort with nudity, here’s how your appointment works. Before you go, exfoliate, shave, and remove makeup, deodorant, lotion, and jewelry. Once you arrive, Linda will give you the lowdown on how to prepare, then she’ll mix your solution while you’re disrobing. She comes into the private room, sprays on 2 coats of tanner, and then sets up 3 fans aimed at your front and back sides to speed along the drying process. She’ll leave you to dry for about 10 minutes. You put on your dark, loose-fitting clothes, and you’re bronzed, beautiful, and out the door! The solution needs 8 hours to set before you can shower or sweat; your true color will emerge after your first shower.

The next morning, don’t fret when you see orange waves cascading down the drain when you shower. You’ll think your whole tan is washing off, but it’s not. When you step out of the shower and look in the mirror, you see the prettiest, bronziest, glow – the shade your skin would turn after spending a week on the beach. But with no sun damage!

There’s a reason why nearly everyone who goes to Linda is a repeat client: they love the way they look.

4th of July Beauty Survival Guide

Independence Day: it’s the one holiday where nearly everyone heads outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and patriotic festivities. Whether you’re beachbound, heading to a backyard BBQ, or basking in the sun poolside, celebrate your independence from being a hot mess with these simple beauty tricks to help you survive the holiday heat…and look great doing it.

1. Let the BBQ get crispy…not your skin.
Broken record moment: sunscreen is a must! If you’re spending any time outdoors, you need a protective barrier from all those UV rays that will turn your skin into a wrinkled, spotted, damaged mess. The easiest way to do it is to use a paint-by-numbers system; rub in a high-SPF cream on your face to ward off wrinkles, and spritz a lower body spray SPF on the rest of your bod. Use a shot glass-sized amount to adequately cover your entire body, excluding your face. Reapply frequently (at least once every 2 hours), especially if you’re at the beach or pool, where reflective sun from the water adds to your burn time.

3. Make your eye makeup melt-proof.
Use a water-resistant cream shadow for long-lasting color that doesn’t smudge or slide down your cheeks. Makeup Forever Aqua Cream ($22) is creamy, easily blendable, and utterly smudge-proof. It won’t crease or melt when the temps spike, and comes in a kaleidoscope of shimmery shades. Also, a gel eyeliner like MAC Fluidline or Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner will stay put, no matter how hot & humid it gets. Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes is a pencil eyeliner that’s waterproof – a nice alternative if you dislike gel formulas.

3. Get gorgeous gams.
Smoothing a little bronzer on your legs will make you miniskirt-ready in about 30 seconds. Make legs look moisturized, shimmery, and overall hot with a shimmer-packed bronzer like Physicians Formula Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting Pressed Shimmer Bronzer ($15), which extends the life of your tan, or MAC To the Beach Body Oil ($22, sold out online, but may be available in stores).

4. Give your hair a break.
If you’re swimming or even sweating, your hair is going to freak out a little. I am the queen of fighting my naturally wavy hair; even on the hottest, stickiest days, and I try to straighten my hair. This year, I vow to give up the fight and let my waves loose. Natural hair is more appropriate for a picnic than stick-straight hair, anyway. There are some great wave-boosters like John Frieda Frizz Ease Spiral Style Curl-Defining Spray Gel ($6) and Living Proof Wave Shaping Curl Defining No Frizz Styling Cream ($35). Run one of these through your stands, and kick back in the afternoon sunshine while your hair air-dries.

5. Avoid ingrown hairs.
So. You’re headed to the beach. Chances are, you had a little waxing done to clean up and prep. Avoid painful ingrowns by dampening a cotton ball with a product like TendSkin ($20) or Whish Flawless Ingrown Hair Serum ($22.50). And avoid saltwater and chlorine for a day post-wax.

Fire up those sparklers!!
