Bobbi Brown Blush in Pale Pink ($24) is one of the items you’ll always fine in my makeup bag. It looks almost hot pink in the compact, but on my fair skin, it’s a diffused, creamy pale pink. I can’t go a day without this (unless I want a dewier finish; then I use Bobbi’s Cream Blush in Pale Pink). A few sweeps of this across the apples of my cheeks gets me glowing and ready to face the day. It’s instant refreshment in powder form. And although the compact looks small, the product will last you a very long time, even with daily use.

MAC Holiday 2010: A Tartan Tale
My heart is skipping like 10,000 beats right now. This. Is. AMAZING. Judging by this single photo, MAC’s holiday 2010 collection, A Tartan Tale, is shaping up to be one of the most ridiculously cool collections I’ve ever seen. Mad for plaid my entire life, I love the packaging, with its royal crests and regal plaid patterns, and the colors look killer. I need one of each. Now, please.
The massive collection will include an individual color collection and these palettes, kits, and sets, which are obviously to die for.
Launches October 28. Not soon enough.
Lilly Pulitzer Makeup Bag
I got this cute pink-and-green cosmetic bag with a faint crab print for just $19 (originally $44) at the Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sale. Major deals are to be had at the sale; if you’re in the Philly area, stop by the Valley Forge Convention Center to scope out the scene. The sale ends today at 4 p.m. Happy shopping!
Makeup Bag Staples: MAC Powerpoint Eyeliner in Engraved
Every girl needs a great black eyeliner. If you only have room for 1 liner in your makeup bag, it should be a pencil. When all you have time for is a quick swipe, it works. When you want to take the time to do precise lining, it’ll be there for you. And it’s portable. The black liner I’ve been turning to for years is MAC Powerpoint Eyeliner in Engraved ($14.50).
I got hooked on this back in college, when I’d go to a lot of rock shows. The shows were always at small, cramped clubs with hoards of people jammed shoulder-to-shoulder on the floor. I wasn’t yet 21, so I’d be crowded in with the masses instead of enjoying breathing room at the bar. The first time I left a concert looking like a sweat-soaked zombie with black liner streaked down my cheeks, I knew I needed a makeup change. That’s when Powerpoint came into my life.
I remember going to the MAC counter and telling the sales associate I needed a black liner that wouldn’t go anywhere once it was on. Something sweatproof was essential. She handed me Powerpoint, and it’s been in my makeup bag for 9 years.
It truly doesn’t go anywhere once it’s applied, but unlike gel eyeliners (which I looove), it’s easily smudged right after application; creating a smoky eye is a cinch. At the end of the day, after 8 hours of work, a butt-kicking Pilates class, and running errands, it’s still wearing as strong as it was at 7am. If it can last through hours in a moshpit, it can certainly last through your Saturday night date.
If you’re looking for a liner that won’t let you down, this just may be your ticket.
Makeup Bag Staples: MAC Phloof! and Smashbox Minx eyeshadows
Every girl needs in her makeup bag the tools and products to create a perfect smoky eye. Normally, this means a set of great blending brushes, and black-hued and light highlighting shadows.
For the times when black is too harsh, I like to do a twist on the smoky eye with a metallic dark-purple shadow. I’ve tried many versions, but my favorite is Smashbox Minx ($16). The shadow is fine-milled, and has a great dark-purple base with brown-ish undertones, and is dotted with micro-fine shimmer particles. It look amazing on cool skintones, and comes off as just softly smoky — not purple.
MAC Phloof! ($14.50) is my all-time favorite highlighting shadow. You can literally use this shadow as the base for all eye looks, not just smoky eyes. It’s a frost formula, which is the best kind to use in this manner because it lays down a solid base with a decent amount of color in just one layer. You don’t need to keep piling it on to build color. And it’s loaded with fine shimmer. It just lights up your eyes instead of making them look white-washed and undefined. This is the only light-colored eyeshadow I will wear solo on days when I don’t feel like applying a full face of makeup.
With these 2 shadows in your makeup bag, you can create virtually any type of look, from daytime-appropriate to smoky.
Makeup Bag Staples: Smashbox Limitless Long-Wear Lip Gloss in Forever
Smashbox Limitless Long-Wear Lipgloss ($21) in Forever is one of my favorite glosses on the market. I am a gloss girl, but what I hate about glosses is that after a sip of a drink, they basically perform a disappearing act. No trace of color or shine remains.
Enter Smashbox. I know a lot of glosses promise to cling to your lips for hours, but they dry lips out as they do so. This gloss stays put while imparting a moisturized feel. It’s packed with SPF15, sea kale, and vitamins A, C, & E to keep your pout protected from UV rays and nourished. One coat is all it takes to get lips glossy and colorful.
Forever is a really pretty pink that gives enough definition to wear it alone. It’s wildly flattering.
