Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Pen

anastasia-brow-penYou may remember my obsession with the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Pen. There was just one problem with it; it was drying out so quickly, I was buying a new one every month. At that price point ($21), a product should last longer. A consultant at Sephora steered me toward the Anastasia Brow Pen Long-Wearing Brow Tint ($21), which I am absolutely loving.

I was a little skeptical at first because I was so used to the dried-up Stila pen, I pressed hard to get color out of the pen. That was a big mistake with the Anastasia version. The Universal Light shade (which I use because I’m blonde and fair) came out so dark, my brows looked drawn on. But with a lighter touch,

There are a few things I really like about this pen. The firm, fine pen tip holds really pigmented color, so I found myself naturally using short, quick strokes to apply it, which results in natural-looking brow hairs. Also, this pen feels sturdier in my hand than the Stila pen, which helps me get more precision when applying the color. The color doesn’t drip or run during application. And as the name implies, this tint stays on skin all day without fading (as does the Stila version).

anastasia-brow-pen-swatchesAs far as the pigment goes, this is a little warmer than the Stila version, which was more taupe-y. It has more of a reddish undertone, which I didn’t think would work for my cool coloring, but it does. I took photos of swatches on my NW20 skin without flash (left) and with flash (right) so you could see the true hue of the product.

Bottom line: this is an excellent brow product that beautifully defines and fills in sparse spots in my brows. Remember to use a light touch, and you can sculpt full, thick brows that are universally flattering. One more thing:  it’s also a hit with my mom, who has very faint brows (due to thinning and lightening that comes with aging). This fakes fuller arches and transforms her entire face. It makes SUCH a difference on her!

Honestly, I still do love the Stila pen. If you have a beauty budget that allows you to purchase it monthly, I would definitely stick with it. Personally, I need something that lasts a little longer. So far, I’ve been using the Anastasia pen for a month and it’s still going strong. I think it’s a keeper.anastasia-brow-pen2

Anastasia Holiday ’12: Want You To Want Me Palette

Holiday fetes and gatherings are the perfect reason to break out sumptuous makeup. At a time of year when everything is a little richer, a heavier eye is a great way to prep for a party. With this in mind, brow queen Anastasia Soare created the new Want You To Want Me Eye Palette ($34, LE) that includes a mix of shadows in shades of beige, taupe, and purple. They can be layered for a smoky nighttime look, or muted for daytime wear.

The velvet-covered box contains a smaller, removable eye palette, mini brow gel in clear, mini liquid liner in black, and a travel-sized dual-ended shadow brush.

The nine included shadow shades are (top row, from left): Platform Wedge, Front Row Center, Ziggy; (middle row, from left): Members Only, Power Ballad, Jellies; (bottom row, from left): Graphic Ts, Brass in Pocket, Iron On.

Available now at Sephora and Nordstrom.

What’s In My Makeup Bag

I have 3 makeup kits: a train case that has all my products that I often use when I do makeup for other people, a bigger personal case that contains the items I don’t use every day (like my smoky eyeshadows and the like), and a small bag of everyday essentials. By far, the items I turn to literally every single day are stashed in the smallest case. Here is what’s inside that case. I would recommend these products without hesitation; they’re the ones I rely on day in and day out.

1. Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Pale Pink ($24): This cream blush lasts all day, and is the prettiest pink shade I’ve found. It glides on whisper-soft for a gentle blush, and layers beautifully for a more pronounced flush. Note: this is the old packaging of this product; check out the new packaging, available now.

2. Shiseido Eyelash Curler ($19): Since the She Uemura curler is only sold online now, I use this–and it’s just as good. Curls expertly, with all-day hold.

3. MAC Strobe Cream ($15-$30): I mix a few drops of this into my tinted moisturizer for extra glow.

4. MAC Bronzing Powder in Refined Golden ($23): This shimmery bronzer gives my fair skin just enough bronzey glow that’s believable, not fake. Note: This packaging is from the 2010 “To The Beach” collection, and is no longer available. Refined Golden is part of MAC’s permanent collection, so the bronzer itself is still available.

Anastasia’s The Kit For Perfect Brows and Eyes

If you’re clueless about brows and just can’t get to a pro for a shaping, celeb brow guru Anastasia Soare can help with The Kit For Perfect Brows and Eyes ($75). While I can’t fully get on board with the stencil method (I believe everyone’s brows are unique), I do think it’s the best alternative to a professional shaping. Why? Because at home, we tend to pluck in magnifying mirrors, or pull out stray strands rather than trim, or generally have no clue what we’re doing when it comes to brow maintenance. And that’s where Anastasia steps in. She makes it easy to give yourself arches that flatter you, even if you lack the necessary know-how.

This kit is a bit of an investment, but it goes beyond basic brow products. Tucked inside, you’ll find necessities and treats for your arches, including:

  • A set of stencils so you can determine your ideal brow shape and thickness
  • Brow Powder Duo
  • Anastasia tweezers
  • Clear brow gel to set your brows in place
  • Matte Camille highlighter to spotlight your arches
  • Mini dual-ended brush (angle-cut brush for applying powder on one end, spoolie brush for brushing brows on the other)
  • And a DVD and instructions to pull it all together.

In addition to the brow products, the kit includes a Cooling Eye Brightener (to bring life back to tired, baggy eyes), and a mini tube of Lash Lifting Mascara. Continue reading

Rx for Sparse Brows

Image of Rachel Weisz via beautyeditor.ca

Brows are having a major moment. When shaped correctly according to your facial features and bone structure, they can provide a gorgeous frame for your eyes, and create the illusion of symmetry on the rest of your face.

So, what’s a gal to do if she’s got sparse, thin, or overplucked brows? Fake it till you make it. Since I started caring about my brows 3 years ago, I’ve tried so many products as I’ve patiently waited for them to grow in, lower the arch, and take on a more flattering shape (sidenote: triangular brows are not flattering). With these brow-enhancing products, you’ll sport a set of golden arches. There’s something for everyone after the jump.

Primping With Anastasia ULTA-Mate Brow Kit

I swear by Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Duality, a dual-ended matte and shimmer highlighter that you slick on under your brows. This pencil retails for $23. In Ulta recently, I saw Anastasia’s Ulta-Mate Brow Kit ($29), an Ulta exclusive. I decided that since the Brow Duality itself costs $23, I’d spend the extra $6 and get this kit. It’s such a great deal (the package says the retail value is $64): in addition to the Brow Duality, you also get the Brow Wiz pencil, a mini Anastasia tweezer, and a small tube of Anastasia Clear Brow Gel. It’s available in 2 shades: Ash Blonde (my choice) and Medium Ash.

Kiss Unwanted Hair Goodbye: Anastasia Mini Wax Kit

Unruly brows that need a little grooming? Pesky upper-lip hairs need removing, pronto? Brow guru Anastasia Soare‘s got you covered with her Mini Wax Kit ($12). Used by Anastasia herself on celebrity clients while traveling, the kit will take care of all your facial hair removal needs in the privacy of your own home. Perfect for those times when you absolutely need a clean-up and your brow girl or guy is booked solid.

The small container of wax (0.5oz.) will last a surprisingly long time. It’s sugar-based, and is proven to be gentle on delicate facial skin, causing minimal irritation and redness. Use the included dual-tipped wooden sticks to apply wax to the skin. One end is slanted for application, the other pointed for areas where you need extra precision. The natural muslin strips remove wax and hair with ease, reducing pain and swelling. Just be sure to use a steady hand when going anywhere near your brows.

Best of all, you won’t have to bear your reddened skin to the world on your way home from the salon.

SugarSocial Review: Anastasia Brow Studio at Nordstrom

anastasiaI was faced with an eyebrow conundrum this week: my brows were unruly, and I had nowhere to get them cleaned up. My trusted aesthetician is on maternity leave, and I have no time this week to see the pro I found to shape my brows in her absence. All I needed was a clean-up, but I’m hesitant to go to just anybody because I’m growing out my brows, and I’ve finally gotten them to a point where they are a bit thicker.

I decided to book an appointment at the Anastasia Brow Studio at Nordstrom for a waxing. Anastasia Soare, Hollywood brow guru, has brought her luxe salon in a mini version to Nordstrom stores across the country. All technicians are trained by Anastasia herself, or by one of her top-level associates, and follow the Anastasia method of brow shaping.

It was difficult getting someone on the phone, but I left a voicemail, and my call was promptly returned. I was able to book an appointment for the same day.

When I arrived at the one-room studio, located near the cosmetics department, my tech greeted me. She asked me a few quick questions, like what I usually do to maintain my brow shape, what I was looking for with my brows, and then seated in me in one of 2 treatment chairs and tilted me back so that my face was directly under an arched lamp. Getting waxed where Nordstrom shoppers could peer in was a bit uncomfortable at first, but I got over that quickly. Although I was facing the opposite direction, I could see that behind me was a small station brimming with Anastasia products. And then we got down to business.

Anastasia Brow Duality

Anastasia Brow DualityIn Sephora a few weeks ago, a sales associate used Anastasia Brow Duality ($23) under my arches. Never in my life would I think of using a pencil on my browbone; for me, pearly shadows give a much softer effect while highlighting and defining brows. I’d always thought of brow enhancing pencils as harsh, giving brows and eyes that “overdone” look.

Not this one.

The dual-ended pencil has a matte tip for daytime brow highlighting (which is more subtle), and a shimmery tip for night-out looks. It not only helped to define my brows, but it brought light to my entire eye area by highlighting the browbone. It gave my eye makeup a finishing touch, and almost seemed to “lift” my entire eye area. All this from a double-tipped pencil!

More details after the jump.
