Brush Master Class Part 2: Eye Brushes

Ready for another brush lesson? In yesterday’s Brush Master Class, we covered the best face brushes. Today, we’ll look at the best brushes for your eyes. Your eyes get the most attention, so you want them to look great! These brushes will get you there.

1. MAC 217 Blending Brush ($23): This is the best brush for applying eyeshadow and blending it out. When I bought this, my entire skill set changed because it lets you apply eyeshadow in so many different ways. The bristles on this are densely-packed, and they pick up a lot of shadow, so it’s essential for times you want a solid color on the eye, a bold eye, or a smoky eye. I use this to place my color, and then I blend it with…

2. MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush ($31): Another can’t-live-without-it eye brush. It’s not as dense, so it will pick up and deposit less product; it’s great for the times you want a sheerer wash of color on the eye. And it’s always the final brush I use on my eyes to blend everything out or together. It makes shadow edges melt seamlessly into your skin so you’re left with no harsh lines.

3. MAC 219 Pencil Brush ($25): This is excellent for applying and smudging shadow on the lower lash line. When I was talked into buying this, I never thought I’d use it. I now reach for it every single time I need to apply shadow in small spaces or smudge out color under my eyes. It instantly finishes the eyes, and makes it look like a pro applied the makeup. It’s particularly great for working in small areas, like the inner corners of the eye or close to the lashline.

4. Urban Decay Good Karma Eyeshadow Brush ($26): This brush is ideal for laying down color on the lid. I got mine free with my Naked palette, but it’s available for purchase separately now. Its flat heads allows you to cover a large portion of the lid in one sweep. It’s a great lay-down brush that causes minimal fallout.

5. Bobbi Brown Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush ($25): This flat brush has an thin, tapered tip with short, firm hairs. The precision this brush allows is the best I’ve found; it lets you apply gel or cream eyeliner with ease, and you can get in really close to the upper and lower lashlines because the head is flat and skinny. Feel free to apply wet or dry powder shadow with this, too. Finally, you can rub it against a pencil liner tip and use this to apply it. An all around fantastic brush.

6. Disposable mascara wands ($free!): People always laugh when they find these spilling out of my bag and strewn across my vanity, but there’s a reason why I stash them everywhere; they are the best for brushing through brows and setting their shape. And they’re free, so you can stash them everywhere you could possibly need them, and if you lose them, who cares? MAC makes my favorite–stock up at the store or counter next time you’re there.

7. MAC 208 Angled Brow Brush ($20): If you use powder to define your brows, this is a fantastic tool for applying it. It’s cut on an angle, stiff enough to press the powder exactly where you want it, fine enough to work into even the thinnest brows. And in a pinch (or if you want to double the use of your brushes), this can also be used to apply gel or cream eyeliners.

What are some of your favorite brushes? Any must-haves that aren’t on this list? Feel free to share in the comments.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse

I am super obsessed with brows, and any product that can make them look better. And leave it to Tarte (there they go with their awesomeness again) to really it bring it for your brows with their Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse & brow brush ($28).

I am definitely a brow pencil kind of girl (see my favorites here & here). I don’t like brow powder, could never master it, and therefore never used it for more than about 2 consecutive weeks. I have pencil application down to a science, but just could never get on board with powder. But…mousse? That’s a different story. I never tried a brow mousse before, and that’s a shame, because this one absolutely rocks.

Your New Best Friend: Billion Dollar Brows Brow Buddy

If there’s one thing I’ve noticed since starting this beauty blog a year and a half ago, it’s that there are a lot of really bad brows out there. I used to be one of those women walking around looking permanently surprised with a too-high arch. In high school, my brows were literally rectangular (I’m not even sure how I did that). That was the problem with shaping my own brows; no knowledge of my face shape led to a long-term disaster on my forehead.

If your brows sound like this, don’t worry — you’re in luck. Billion Dollar Brows, the famous Beverly Hills brow salon, is here to help. BDB — which I’ve written about before here, here and here — is totally dedicated to the art of the arch. The talented artists have shaped the brows of Lauren Conrad and other celebs, and the salon’s signature line of products has been featured in Vanity Fair, Lucky, Daily Candy…and about a million other publications. The awesome people at Billion Dollar Brows sent me a package full of brow-enhancing goodies for me to review. I can’t thank them enough for their generosity!

If you live near L.A., get your booty into BDB for a pro shaping. If you can’t make it to L.A., let The Brow Buddy ($35 for the kit) give you expertly-crafted brows right at home.

Tweezerman for BeneFit: Polished Brows

BeneFit has teamed up with Tweezerman to bring you an exclusive limited-edition line of supercute tools to whip unruly brows into shape. Tweezerman for BeneFit features four tools all wrapped up in adorbable packaging and prints.

ProCurl Lash Curler ($20, above) is Tweezerman’s signature tool that lifts lashes and gives them a pretty, fanned-out look. Plus, you get 3 refill pads – which, sadly, are 2 more than you get with my all-time fave Shu Uemura curler. It’ll keep your lashes curled and fab for quite some time.

The Slant-Tip Tweezer ($25) is the traditional Tweezerman tool. With a firm grip, hand-filed stainless steel tip, and steady tension in the handles, this tweezer will take care of any unsightly hair growth. The handles are covered in a pale blush print that is feminine and cute to look at.

The Pointed Slant Tweezer ($30) offers ultimate precision and effortlessly grabs hard-to-reach hairs. Gripping fine or supershort hairs is a cinch with the sharp, exact point. The sunny yellow print will also help to ease the pain of plucking (maybe).

The Brow Shaping Brush ($12) is the one item in this collection to skip. Although this claims to expertly groom brows so you can set them in place with clear gel, you can easily accomplish the job — for free — with clean disposable mascara wands.

Free sharpening
All Tweezerman products come with a free sharpening service. If you notice your tweezers aren’t gripping as effectively as they used to, the tips are probably dull. Inquire about free sharpening services where you purchased your tweezers.

BeneFit Brow Bar
If you need a little help shaping up brows before you tackle them with the BeneFit tweezers, BeneFit is here to rescue you.
