Tarte Maracuja Divine Shine Lipgloss in Charmed

Sometimes, you just have to buy makeup because it’s pretty. And the packaging on Tarte’s Divine Shine Maracuja Lipgloss ($21) is so gorgeous, it was really hard to resist. So I didn’t.

I wrote about how badly I wanted to try this gloss a few weeks ago (post here), and when I finally had the chance to swing by Sephora and pick it up, it was tough to make a decision on which shade to get! After much internal debate, I finally chose Charmed, a cool-toned, blue-based pink that’s utterly feminine. (Full disclosure: I later went back and got Amused, a bright cool pink — the other color I was debating.) The gloss is infused with maracuja oil, a naturally-derived oil from Brazilian maracuja fruit. Tarte says that Amazonian women call it “nature’s miracle” because of its restorative, skin-loving properties. In this case, it’s supposed to help battle fine lines and wrinkles on the lips and around the mouth.

And can we just talk for a second about the packaging? Sometimes, a girl’s gotta buy makeup because it’s in cute packaging. And this may be the prettiest lipgloss tube I’ve ever seen, with the floral pattern and bright colors. And it doesn’t stop there; it’s got a great feature that I’m enamored with: you click the bottom, rather than twisting it, to funnel the gloss into the built-in brush. It makes application quicker, more convenient (just one hand needed), and easier to do on the fly. It sounds like a small variation, but actually, this one has a big impact. It makes application much smoother, faster, and fun (because of the clicking!).I have 2 complaints about this product. First, when I applied the gloss, the color was much sheerer than it looked in the tube. It basically looked like a clear gloss on my lips. It was ultra-shiny, with a slightly creamy finish. (As far as color goes, Amused was a much better pick because it was opaque and creamy.) My second complaint: the texture is really tacky. Whenever the wind blew, my hair stuck to my lips (hate that!). But still, these weren’t dealbreakers, because there are so many things I loved about this product. I’ve been using it daily.

What do you think of Tarte using maracuja oil in their products? Are you going to try any of them? Aren’t you just swooning over this adorable packaging?!

Let’s Get Glowing

Image by Daria Zaytseva via Pinterest

Right around this time of year is when I start to loathe my very fair skin. It’s pasty from months of little sunshine and being cooped up indoors all winter, my freckles seem magnified because they look darker in contrast to my pale skin, and I’m dying for some sort of a boost. If you’re very fair like me, it may be a little too early for self-tanner and toasty-bronze skin…and even if you’re not fair, it’s safe to assume you could use a boost after months of shorter days. So how do you get a killer complexion that’s radiant and refreshed-looking? Luminizer! It’s the quickest, easiest way to banish leftover winter dullness and mask imperfections.

I’ve compiled a guide to luminizers for you, complete with their pros and cons. While I haven’t purchased all of these, I have tested them repeatedly…and I took notes! I’ve listed each product’s pros and cons to help you pick the highlighter that’s right for you.

Benefit High Beam ($26)
A pearly pink liquid that gives you the best possible version of your skin and tastefully adds shimmer.
Pros: This one is a tried-and-true winner; it makes your skin look flawlessly glowy, and it’s suitable for almost all skin tones.
Cons: …None?
(Image via Sephora)

Make Up For Ever Uplight Luminizer Gel ($29)
A gel formula that glides on skin smoothly and stays put for hours.
Pros: Available in a staggering 8 shades and 3 finishes (dewy, pearly, and sparkling), so you can achieve basically any look you want, from glowy and natural to bronzed and glam, to flushed and rosy-cheeked. Each shade lets your skin show through and blends well (it just melts into your cheeks), thanks to the smooth gel formula. Use it all over.
Cons: Again, this one will be tough…I’m gonna go with none.

NARS Illuminator ($30) in Copacabana (pearly pink), Orgasm (peachy-pink), Super Orgasm (peachy-pink loaded with glitter) & Laguna (light tan)
Pros: Sheer, luminous, and creamy, these are great for putting the spotlight on the high points of your face (cheeks, bridge of nose, brow bones, Cupid’s bow). Easily blendable, and available in 4 shades for different skin tones and effects.
Cons: Inconsistency between the shades. Based on my experience, Copacabana, the lightest shade, barely shows up on skin (with just a hint of shimmer), while the Laguna can appear too dark. Also, different batches of Super Orgasm that I’ve tested seem to have varying glitter content–some to the point where it was too shimmery. Also, a packaging flaw: after repeated use, product collects in a gooey mess under the flipcap.

Borderline Obsessed with Tarte Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss

One night when I couldn’t sleep a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon this video by Tarte. Ever since then, I cannot stop thinking about Tarte Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss ($21). Tarte Maracuja Blush & Glow

Want to shimmer and shine, but afraid of looking like a discoball? Tarte Maracuja Blush & Glow ($32) combines 2 cheeky essentials into 1 package for a glowy finish that’s anything but garish. And it’s ideal for on-the-go touch-ups; the compact size is practically made for tossing in your purse.

In the tube, you’ll find a creamy, pearly highlighter that will add instant radiance to your cheekbones (and browbones, bridge of nose, and Cupid’s bow). Tucked under the clear plastic cap is a dome of cream blush to swipe on top of the luminizer. You can dab it on directly from the tube, or lightly run your fingertips over it to pick up some product and pat on cheeks with your fingers. Both products are infused with Maracuja oil, which is supposed to sink into your skin quickly and deliver a rapid boost of vitamin C and fatty acids.

Available in shades: Candlelight (champagne shimmer), Moonlight (pink shimmer), and Sunlight (peach shimmer). You can grab this now at your local Sephora or online.

Tarte The Starlet Makeup Vanity

How do I love Tarte’s The Starlet Makeup Vanity ($52)? Let me count the ways.

1. It features 6 color-coordinated eyeshadow quads. That’s 24 eyeshadows. Arranged for you by color, so you can create cohesive looks without even thinking.

2. Besides having your eyes covered, it’s jam-packed with everything you need to get all dolled up: Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Glory and Starlet; Park Avenue Princess bronzing powder; mini Lights, Provocateur Amazonian Clay Shimmering Powder in Rose; Lights, Camera, Lashes! mascara; and MultiplEYE Natural Lash Enhancing Primer.

3. It is literally the perfect gift for makeup mavens of all ages. This limited-edition makeup vanity is great for women/girls trying to build a makeup collection, and product junkies who collect anything they can get their hands on.

4. It’s encased in mirrors, so it’ll sit pretty on a vanity/bathroom counter/etc.

5. It’s not another the run-of-the-mill crappy gift set. Giant sets like this are usually pretty subpar, with eyeshadows (typically in unflattering shades) that have tons of fallout, blushes that fade within and hour, and powders that lose their staying power instantly. Not this. These are all high-quality Tarte cosmetics, which makes this even more giftable.

6. Like all Tarte cosmetics, the products in this kit are naturally-derived and free of most of the toxic stuff found in many cosmetics.

7. It’s a ridiculous bargain. If you bought all these pieces individually, it would cost you $505.

Do I need to keep counting? Rush to Sephora and get like, 10 of these. I don’t know any woman who wouldn’t go nuts for this! It’s limited edition, so once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.Images via Sephora

Getting Cheeky with Tarte Amazonian Clay Long-Wear Blush

After a visit to the Amazon, Tarte founder Maureen Kelly was inspired to create a naturally-derived powder blush. The end result is Amazonian Clay Long-Wear Blush ($25), the latest in Tarte’s green beauty lineup.

I’m pretty amazed at how Tarte made this blush with naturally-dervied ingredients. Clay is sustainably harvested from the banks of the Amazon, then folded into this blush, which is then baked in the sun to solidify. The end result is a beautiful, smooth, long-wearing blush that stays put for 12 hours. The shades are inspired by Tarte’s best-selling cheek stains; so if you want a beautiful flush with a little less dewy luster, this is your ticket. And whether you prefer soft or vivid color (check out amused, natural beauty, and flush in the photo above), there is something here to suit your tastes.

Besides being loaded with vibrant, true color, the clay in these blushes pack serious skin benefits. Amazonian clay mattifies, removes oil build-up, evens and smooths skin’s appearance, hydrates, nourishes, reduces the appearance of dryness and flakiness, and improves skin texture and clarity. That’s a lot for such a small package.

This set is equally great for girls who are just learning to apply makeup, and seasoned makeup junkies.
